5 certificates were issued. In 7 instances certificates were
suspended and a schedule of dilapidations forwarded to the owner,
and in most cases the work required has been carried out.
Smoke Abatement.
Observations of shafts were made with reference to the
emission of smoke. In no instance was it of such a character as
to warrant the institution of legal proceedings.
Offensive Trades.
There are only two small traders in the Borough, in the
Langdon Crescent area, who carry on businesses which come
within the designation of offensive trades. These works are well
conducted and there have been no complaints.
Disinfection.
1,970 premises were disinfected—1,299 for infectious disease,
586 for tuberculosis, and 85 for other causes. The steam disinfector
at the Isolation Hospital is used for bedding and other
articles requiring disinfection.
Infectious Diseases.
In all cases of infectious disease notified, the Inspector at
once visits the premises, the sanitary arrangements and general
condition of the houses are examined and, where necessary, sanitary
notices are served upon persons responsible. If the case is
nursed at home, directions are given as to isolation and prevention
of spread of the disease.
A report of every case is prepared by the Inspector for the
Medical Officer of Health. The infected part of the house is disinfected
at the termination of the case.
The Borough Librarian is notified of all infected premises
and books from infected houses are returnable direct to the Public
Health Department and disinfected before return to circulation.
Factories, Workshops ans! Outworkers' Premises.
There are 191 factories and workshops in the Borough, including
bakehouses and laundries. During the year 366 inspections
have been made, of which 139 were to homes of outworkers.
