The existing old brick gully pits are getting more and more into disfavour owing to
their porosity, the water in them gradually leaking away into the surrounding ground, with
the result that after slight periods of drought they require filling up, or should there be any
slight deposit very unpleasant smells arise from them. Daring the past year, when inserting
new ones, I have taken the opportunity of testing three different water-tight gullies brought
to my notice, of which I had a favourable opinion, two in stoneware and one in iron, and in
three other instances I have substituted iron gullies of the pattern mentioned in my
1896 report.
18 New connections have been made with the sewers for the additional gullies which
have been inserted in the undermentioned streets:—
9 New Eoad, Plough Bridge (Nottingham iron gully).
2 Galleywall Eoad (stoneware, Wakefield's patent).
2 Tissington Street (iron double trapped).
1 Prospect Street (stoneware, Wakefield's patent).
*1 Nolan Place (iron double trapped).
1 Silver Street do.
2 Ainstey Street do.
*2 Glebe Eoad do.
1 Botberhithe Street (stoneware, Sykes' patent).
*1 Matson Street (iron double trapped).
New connections for all except those marked thus *.
Thirty-two of the existing gullies have been found with broken traps and have had new
stoneware ones inserted, surrounded with concrete, in the streets, as detailed below:—

Cranham Eoad 2 Princes Passage ... 1
Silwood Street 8 Eugenia Eoad ... 2
