(b) Meat and other Foods.
Meat Inspection.
The following are the addresses of the nine licensed slaughter
houses in the district: 7, Northolt Road, Harrow; rear of 25,
High Street, Wealdstone; rear of 94, High Street, Wealdstone;
rear of High Street, Pinner; Green Man, Honeypot Lane, Stanmore;
Stanmore Hill, Stanmore; Stanmore Hall Farm, Dennis
Lane, Stanmore; rear of 63, High Street, Edgware; Warren
House Farm, Wood Lane, Stanmore.
All these premises have been used for the purpose for a number
of years. They are kept clean and any contraventions of the
bye-laws noted have been immediately remedied.
Comparatively little killing is now done in the district. All
three constituent Councils of the present district adopted the clause
of the Slaughter of Animals Act by which sheep are included in the
list of animals to be slaughtered by the humane killer.
592 visits were paid by the Inspectors to these premises during
the year, the number of carcases examined being 2,910.
Of the 168 beasts slaughtered, 33 were unsound in some
respect. Parasitic disease of the liver was found 25 times. The
only other common disease present was tuberculosis, being found
in the head of 6, tongue of 5, lungs of 9, liver of 5, stomach of 2,
and fat of 2 (more than one organ of the same animal being frequently
affected). In addition to these diseased organs, 40-lbs. of
beef were condemned on account of bruising.
61 of the 2,068 pigs slaughtered were diseased, cirrhosis of
the liver occurring in 16, pericarditis in 21, pleurisy in 9, and
pneumonia in one. Tuberculosis was found in the head of 12, the
lungs of 13, the liver of 13, the stomach of 12, and the fat of 19.
626 sheep were slaughtered, of which only 4 were found
unsound in any respect, in each case the lesion being parasitic
disease of the liver. In addition 20-lbs. of mutton were
surrendered.
No part of the 48 calves slaughtered was found unsound.
All the diseased meat was surrendered, none having to be
seized.
Bakehouses.
There are 28 factory and 7 retail bakehouses in the district,
to which a total of 189 visits were paid in the course of the year.
Food Shops.
681 visits were paid to butchers' shops, 305 to fish shops, 55
to provision shops, 405 to dairies and milk shops, and 65 to greengrocers'
shops.
