England and Wales was 15.4 per 1000* as compared with 14.2,
1515 and 15.5 in the preceding three years. The rate in London
in 1892, was 17.4, compared with 17.7 in 1891,17.6 in 1890;
17.1 in 1889, 16.9 in 1888, and 16.8 in 1887; the latter being
the lowest rate ever recorded.
BIRTHS AND BIRTH-RATE.
The births registered in the 52 weeks of the registration
year 1892, were 3,718: males, 1,867, and females, 1,851; the
numbers in the Town and Brompton sub-districts respectively,
being 3,071, and 647. They were 129 fewer than in 1891 (viz.,
3,847: Town 3,115; Brompton 732), and 323 fewer than in
1872, when the population (127,400) was 39,300 less
than in 1892. The Kensington birth-rate, which is
considerably below that of London as a whole (30.9 in 1892)
has been declining since 1868, when it was 331 per 1000. In
1892 it was 22.3 per 1000, and 2T below the decennial
average (24.4). The rate in the Town sub-district was 25.9,
and in Brompton 13.5, per 1000. There was one birth to 44.8
inhabitants, and 100.9 births of males to 100 of females.
The births of illegitimate children were 181 (26 fewer than
in 1891), viz., males 101, and females 80. Of these births
162 were registered in the Town sub-district, which includes
the Parish workhouse, at which institution there were 117
births, males 56, females 61 (including four still-born; male 1,
females 3), 81 of which were illegitimate. In the Parish
generally, the illegitimate births formed 4.9 percent. of total
births, as against 54, 5.8 and 5.4 percent. in the preceding
three years respectively.
The subjoined Table shews the quarterly number of
births of males and females in each of the sub-districts:—
*The rate in the four quarters, successively, was 11.7, 16.3, 15.7 and 17.8.
Thus only 85,576 persons were married in the first quarter, when Influenza was
so prevalent, the number in the fourth quarter being 132,070.
