191
number of cowsheds in the metropolis ; from 1044 in 1880 to
597 in 1891. In 1878 the number in Kensington was 20 ;
now there are 9, viz., G in North Kensington and 3 in South
Kensington. The names of the licensees, and localities of the
licensed premises, are set out in Table XII. (Appendix).
The several cowsheds were inspected by the Works and
Sanitary Committee in July, who reported on them, as
follows:—
"With one exception the several premises were found in a generally satisfactory
condition. The excepted premises, in Bramley Road, were in
a dirty condition. This not being the first time that your Committee
have had occasion to complain of neglect of the requirements of the
regulations of the Local Authority, they recommend that the attention
of the County Council be drawn to the desirability of withholding
renewal of the license, unless the licensee pledges to keep the premises
in better condition. Your Committee had cause to complain of the
large quantiries of manure found on several of the licensed premises,
both slaughter-houses and cowsheds. It is manifect that the requirements
of the regulations, for the periodical removal of manure, are
not carried out with due regularity, and this remark applies to many
other premises that came under observation in the course of the
inspection : Ledbury Mews was a conspicuous example."
The number of cows kept in the parish has been greatly
diminished. Not many years ago 500 were kept in 28 sheds,
now there are about 50 in 9 sheds. I am glad to be able to
report that the County Council no longer suffer horses to be
stabled in cow-houses, their practice, in this respect, now
corresponding with the views I submitted to, and which were
approved by your Vestry many years ago.
BAKEHOUSES.
The Bakehouses, to the number of 148, viz., 81 in North
Kensington, i.e., north of Uxbridge Road, and 07 in South
Kensington, i.e., the remainder of the parish south of that
road, have been regularly inspected, and such action taken in
individual cases as was found necessary for ensuring compliance
with the sanitary provisions of the Factory Acts, to
which reference has been already made at page 140,
