TWENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT
of THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
BEING FOR THE YEAR 1881.
To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Mary Abbott's, Kensington.
Gentlemen,
I propose to place before you in this Annual Report the
vital statistics of the parish for the registration year 1881 which
terminated on the 31st December. The ordinary sanitary
statistics will as usual be compiled for the parochial year which
terminated on the 25th March, 1882. Other matters calling for
notice will be dealt with as occasion may require.
The vital statistics will be calculated on an estimated population
at the middle of the year of 163,540, this number being arrived at
on data furnished by the Census taken in April, 1881.
The year was a healthy one, as judged by the rate of mortality,
which was the lowest on record. The total number of deaths,
2,726—fewer by 158 than in 1880, and by 266 than in 1879 (a
period of 53 weeks), was also 355 below the corrected decennial
average. The total includes the deaths of 105 non-parishioners
that took place at the Brompton Consumption Hospital and 54
deaths of parishioners in the Hospitals of the Metropolitan Sick
Asylums Board, as well as a not inconsiderable number of strangers,
