DEATHS.
The deaths of parishioners registered in the parish were 2,343,
viz., males 1,122, and females 1,221; adding an estimated number
of 93 deaths as having occurred outside the parish, in hospitals,
the deaths were 2,436, equal to a rate of 18.3 per 1000 living or
one death to 54.5 living. The death rate in London was 22.5;
in 18 large Towns 24.1; in all England 22.6 per 1000. In
England generally the mortality in the male and female sexes
respectively was 23.7 and 21.4 per 1000.

Subjoined is a statement of the deaths registered in the parish, in districts, and quarters, &c.:—

Dealing only with these known deaths, it may be stated that
the mortality in the male sex was at the rate of 20.4 per 1000,
and in the female sex 15.6 per 1000. The mortality in the Town
and Brompton Sub-districts respectively, with correction for the
deaths in the Workhouse, was 18.3 and 15.3 per 1000. The
deaths in the winter quarters exceeded those in the summer
quarters by 125. Six hundred and fifty-six children died under
one year of age, equal to 15.8 per 1000 registered births, (London
15.9), and to 26.3 per cent. of the total deaths, (London 25.1).
Under five years of age there died 979 = 42 per cent, of the total
deaths, (London 41.6). These per centages of deaths of children
will be slightly different if calculated on the total estimated deaths,
viz , 2,436, (vide Table 2, Appendix.) At 60 years of age and
upwards there were 564 deaths = 24.4 per cent. of the total
mortality, (London 21.9). It need hardly be stated that a low
death rate in childhood and at the adult period of life, and a high
one in old age, distinguish a healthy population in places where
the conditions of life are favourable.
The causes of death are recorded in Table 3 in the Appendix in 13 divisions according to age.

The ages at death were as follows:—
