The following information may be of interest as illustrating the
growth of the parish in population and rateable value during
the Century:—

MARRIAGES.
The marriages celebrated last year were 1243, viz., in the
churches 1,065, at other places of worship 107, including 63 at
the Pro-Cathedral; and 71 at the Superintendent Registrar's
Office. The marriage rate, therefore, was 9.3 per 1000: the
rate for all London being 10.3, and for all England 8.32. There
was, in other words, one marriage to 107 of the population.
BIRTHS.
The registered births in 1873 were 4182, or one birth to 31.8
of the population. This represents a birth rate of 31.4 per 1000:
the rate for all London being 35.4, and for all England 35.3;
2105 males were born and 2077 females. The relative proportion
of males born in all England is 104.1 to 100 females: but in this
parish, in 1873, the excess of male births was less than 1 per cent. In
the Town District the births were 3,339, and 843 in the Brompton
District, 32.7 and 27.2 per 1000 respectively. The deficiency in
the birth rate is accounted for by the great disproportion in the
relative number of the two sexes before alluded to. But small as the
birth rate now is it is considerably higher than formerly. In the
census year 1861, the birth rate was only 27.3 per 1000, a rate not
much exceeded in the following three years. In Tables 1 and 1
(Appendix) there will be found some interesting information on
this head.
