Amongst catarrhal children, there were a few failures, but the greater
proportion of these were found to respond to gradually increasing doses maintained
over several months, and it seems reasonable to infer that much
benefit can result if attendance is regular and kept up until the child is seen
to be in thoroughly sound health. In several instances enlarged glands
disappeared during the treatment, but though local and more intense treatment
was applied in some of these cases, it is felt that the improvement
was a secondary effect associated with the general improvement in health.
In several skin conditions satisfactory results were obtained. It was
found that by a moderate intensity of dosage, given on several successive
days, coupled with other treatment, impetigo of long duration was made
to disappear. In some cases of herpes, accompanied by pain, the treatment
was followed by rapid relief and healing of the skin eruption.
A number of refractory cases were sent away for varying periods to
Convalescent Homes. Their rapid improvement leads to the conclusion
that home conditions were partly responsible for the state of health which
the sunlight alone was not adequate to combat.
It is beyond dispute that, in a district where there is a considerable
poor population, the Artificial Sunlight Clinic is of practical service to the
community."
