Census.
The fourteenth Census of the population of England and Wales was taken on
the 26th April, and a preliminary report was issued by the Registrar-General later
in the year. It is interesting to note that in five year's time (and not ten years
as heretofore) the next Census will be taken. The figures in the preliminary
report have been obtained in advance of the main report by so organising the
procedure of enumeration as to permit simple figures being abstracted locally, and
are subject to confirmation in the subsequent Census reports. It is not expected
that there will be any substantial discrepancy. The population of Woolwich in
1921 was 140,389; in 1931 it was 146,881. The percentage increase was 4 7.
There were only two boroughs which shewed greater increases, namely, Lewisham,
with 26'3, and Wandsworth, with 7*6. Only eight of the metropolitan boroughs
shewed increases, the administrative County and the remaining cities and boroughs
shewing decreases.
Population.
The population at the middle of the year was estimated by the RegistrarGeneral
to be 147,400. Of these 4,800 were military, so that the civilian population
was 142,600. The estimated civilian population in each of the wards of the Borough
is shewn in the following Table, No. 2 :—
