OTHER FOOD PREMISES.
Bakehouses. The number of bakehouses in the Borough
at the end of the year was 41, of which 25 were factories and
9 were underground. The district inspectors made 101
inspections and found it necessary to serve 21 notices. In
the main these were associated with want of cleanliness or
with carelessness in the conduct of the business. The necessary
action was taken by the occupiers without resort to
legal proceedings.
Fried Fish Shops. There were 67 fried fish shops on the
register at the end of the year. These premises were inspected
on 180 occasions and 16 notices were served for
unsatisfactory conditions. A reasonable standard of cleanliness
is now maintained at most of these premises, but in
some instances the occupiers require further education in the
elementary principles to be followed when preparing food
for other people.
Ice Cream. The number of premises were ice cream was
sold during the year was 136, but in many instances the sale
was intermittent. 359 inspections were made, but in only
two instances was it necessary to serve formal notices.
Other Premises. During the year 232 premises, including
restaurants, eating-houses and butchers' shops, were regularly
inspected. 1,184 inspections were made and it was necessary
to serve 39 notices for unsatisfactory conditions, which
were usually due to lack of cleanliness, but occasionally to
faults in construction of the premises. In addition, 2,565
visits were paid to shops and to stalls in the markets.
UNSOUND FOOD.
There were 337 instances of unsound food being surrendered.
