FOOD.
MILK.
The bulk of the Woolwich milk supply is imported into the
Borough, and is delivered at the various railway stations,
but a small quantity is produced locally. There are in the
Borough 13 cowsheds, in which there are 362 milch cows.
The cowsheds are subject to annual licensing by the London
County Council, and in consequence a standard of cleanliness
of a fairly high level is maintained. During the year they
were kept in such a condition as not to justify any objection
being made to the Licensing Sessions of the County Council.
During the period of food control, complete statistics were
obtained with respect to the milk supply and the consumption
of milk. It was then ascertained that approximately 33,000
gallons of milk were consumed each week, but this quantity
varied somewhat from month to month. The Royal Arsenal
Co-operative Society, Ltd., have a large dairy in Woolwich,
where a large percentage of their milk for sale in S.E. London
is prepared for distribution.
The register of purveyors of milk has undergone a slight
change during the year. There are now 72 milkshops on the
register. During the year applications were received from
18 persons to be registered. 12 of these were with respect to
the change of proprietorship and the incoming tenants were
registered. Three applications for registration were refused
because the premises were unsuitable and in two of these
instances the applicants proposed to conduct their business
from a stable in every-day use.
