requiring such treatment are now referred to the Medical
Officer, London County Council, and by him sent to one of
several sanatoriums, principally East Anglian (children),
Essex, and Northern (women). The former is directed by
Dr. Jane Walker; the latter is under the control of the
London Insuranoe Commtitee.
The Public Health Department makes full reports to the
London County Council on the home conditions of cases
recommended and each case is medically examined previously
to acceptance by the Medical Officer of the Tuberculosis
Dispensary. Insured persons are referred to the Insurance
Committee, which sends most of the men to the Downs
Sanatorium.
80. The following table, recommended by the Local
Government BoaTd, shows the condition in each subsequent
year of the survivors from the cases treated in each year
since patients were sent to Peppard. The difference between
the sum of the numbers dead and the survivors, and the
number discharged, in any year, shows the cases lost sight of.
Number of patients discharged in each year who were
(a) alive but not well enough to work; (b) at work, seeking
work, or performing their ordinary duties, in January of
each of the undermentioned years:—
