for general inspection and inspects workshops and factories
(re sanitary provision) where women are not employed:—
Inspector Potter was nominated to Burrage and Herbert
Wards, and Inspector Powell to Eltham, including Food and
Drugs sampling.
On the outbreak of War your Medical Officer of Health
was taking his holiday in Germany and was detained as a
prisoner of war for seven weeks beyond the date when he
should have returned. Colonel Moore, M.D., his locum
tenems, was called up for active service and it became
necessary to appoint another medical man. After some difficulty
in finding one qualified and willing to serve, Dr. Mair
was nominated, and I have to acknowledge the able and
conscientious way in which he filled the gap.
My sincere thanks are also due to the Chief Sanitary
Inspector and the staff of the Department for the way in
which they laboured to prevent the public health of the
Borough from suffering through my absence. Two members
of the clerical staff, Messrs. Britter and Prescott, joined the
Army (Mr. Britter obtaining a commission). Although
temporary clerks were appointed in their place, their absence
greatly increased the work and responsibility of the remaining
clerks, Messrs. Smith and Collyer, and I cannot
speak too highly of the work performed by Mr. Smith as
acting chief clerk.
