On the 22nd December, 1914, a representative of the
Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, Ltd., called at the
Town Hall and stated that the Society had received a
delivery of doubtful turkeys at all their branches in
the Borough. The Chief Sanitary Inspector, accompanied
by Inspector Wood, at once visited the various
branch shops. In several of the shops they found
some of the doubtful turkeys exposed for sale in the
front shop, but the majority of them had been put at
the backs of the various shops by the respective
managers.
The turkeys at the various shops were examined and
the Inspectors decided they were unfit for food, seized
them, and arranged to take them away on the following
day. Those deposited at the backs were seized in
consequence of suggestions that they were going to
be returned to the wholesale firm.
On the following day, 23rd December, 376 turkeys were
collected from different branches and taken before the
Magistrate at the Woolwich Police Court, who made
the order for their destruction, and on the next day,
24th December, a further 246 were surrendered by
the Society for destruction. A total of 622 turkeys,
weighing 2 tons 19 cwt. 27 lbs. were seized and
surrendered.
The Public Health Committee, after consideration of the
fact that in spite of the information volunteered by the
Society, some of the turkeys oontinued to be exposed for
sale, resolved to take proceedings.
The case came before the Magistrate on 25th February,
1915, when he granted £6. 6s. 0d. costs against the Society,
