The increase of population is seen to be wholly among
females. This is accounted for by the fact that in 1901 a
number of single and married men were residing in lodgings
in the Borough apart from their families, owing to the
pressure of work in the Arsenal and lack of housing accommodation.
West Plumstead includes the Burrage, Herbert, Glyndon,
and St. Margaret's Wards; and East Plumstead the Central
and St. Nicholas Wards.
