9. Of the 315 milk samples, 86 were taken on Sunday or
Bank Holidays; 4 of these were found adulterated. In
former years 5 per cent. of samples taken on Sunday were
found adulterated.
60 samples were taken on arrival at railway stations, of
of which two were found adulterated.
10. A record is kept of all analyses of milk made by
the Public Analyst. The average percentage of fat in all
unadulterated samples taken last year was 3.6, and of nonfatty
solids 8 8. This average percentage has now been
been found constant for four years. Out of 301 unadulterated
samples, 136 had less than 3.5 per cent. fat, 128 had from
3.5 to 4.0 per cent., and 37 over 4.0 per cent. fat.
Food Inspection.
11. The inspection of meat and other food received the
usual attention. Inspectors Little, Tedham, and Powell, made
special inspections in rotation.
There was 1 seizure and 46 surrenders. The seizure was
of 16 fowls, which were unfit for food. These were condemned
by a Magistrate and destroyed. The vendor was
fined £10 and £3 3s. Od. costs.
Of the surrenders, 3 were tuberculous, 17 unsound, and
26 livers or other organs affected with parasitic disease or
otherwise diseased.
The meat affected with tuberculosis was pork in two
cases, and cow's lights in the third.
The food surrendered as unsound consisted principally of
fish. A full list is given in Table XIX.
