Underground Rooms.
37. One underground room, separately occupied, in Burrage
"Ward, was found not in accordance with the Act. The service
of notice led to cessation of occupation.
Factories, Workshops, and Workplaces.
38. There were, at the close of the year 227 (229 in 1908)
workshops and workplaces on the register. 323 inspections
were made, and 47 notices served and complied with. 55
inspections of factories were made regarding the sanitary
accommodation, and 17 notices served and complied with.
275 inspections of homeworkers' premises were made, and 14
notices sent and attended to.
Miss Middlebrooke devoted a large amount of her time to
the inspection of workshops, factories, and houses, where
women are employed; 33 new workrooms were measured up
and put on the register.
39. A special report on Home-work was presented to your
Council on October 31st, 1906, and printed in the Annual
Eeport of that year.
Bakehouses.
40. The number of bakehouses in use is now 51, 17 being
underground. They were all inspected twice. I inspected
most of them personally, and found them generally satisfactory.
Eight certified underground bakehouses are not in use.
Ice-cream Shops.
41. Ninety-eight Ice-cream shops were on the register at
the close of the year, compared with 68, 76, and 108, in the
