Marasmus, indefinite terms applied to deaths from immaturity,
congenital syphilis, and other causes The number of deaths
under one week in the past four years were 87, 83, 76, and 55
respectively
The death-rate from premature birth in Woolwich Borough
was 0.32, compared with 0 48, 0.71, and 0 57 in the three
preceding years In England and Wales it was in 1908 18..3
per 1,000 births compared with 14.0 in Woolwich
There were 19 deaths of illegitimate infants The deathrate
of illegitimate infants under one year was 264 per 1,000
births, and that of legitimate infants, 77
20 Compared with 1908 the past year had, among infants,
fewer deaths from premature birth, congenital defects,
whooping cough, diarrhoea, tuberculosis, and overlying ; and
more from measles and wasting diseases Deaths from overlying
were 1, compared with 2, 8, and 5 in the three previous
years There were 21 lives saved in the first week of life, and
31 lives saved in the remainder of the first year
21 Still-births 73 still-born children were buried in the
Woolwich and Plumstead Cemeteries, compared with 74, 97,
and 93 in the three preceding years

years were 403, or 28.1 per thousand population under five at
the census The rates in the five preceding years were 47.2,
36.5, 38.3, 41.9, and 313
