year, but a considerable variation must be expected in a small
population, and, taken along with the statistics of 1899, I think
we may be satisfied that there has been an actual improvement
in the sanitary condition of the area.
Table F shows that the death-rate and infantile death-rate
were each very high, and the birth-rate higher than in 1899.
There were, however, fewer deaths from diarrhoea than for five
years past. A large part of the increased death-rate was due
to the prevalence of measles, whooping cough, and influenza.
