I would again point out that the want of provision to
prevent dampness in many of the older houses in the district
tends to perpetuate conditions that are favourable to the spread
of tubercular diseases.
Sex
Mortality.
Of the total deaths in the Dockyard Sub-District,
there were 248 males and 155 females; in the
Arsenal Sub-District 301 males and 233 females; or, in other
words, of the 937 total deaths in the whole parish 549 were of
males and 388 of females.
Inquests
& Suicides.
There have been 95 Inquests during the year.
There have been 7 Suicides as follows:—Shooting
3, Drowning 1, Cutting Throat 1, and Poisoning 2.
Mortuary.
Eighty bodies were received into the Old
Mortuary Dock Rails of which 55 were of persons resident in
the district and 25 non-resident. Thirteen were brought in by
the Police, and 67 by undertakers, etc.
The new Mortuary in Sun Street, which, together with the
Disinfecting Shelter, was opened in November. Four bodies
were received to the 31st December, 1900.
*Births and
Birth-Rate.

The number of births registered during the year was 1175.

Of these 8 were recorded as illegitimate, 5 male and 3 female.
The birth-rate, therefore, 28.2 per thousand, being the lowest
recorded for nine years.
