and in addition the signature of the vaccinating doctor must be verified
by the Medical Officer of Health of the district. During the year, 979
signatures on certificates were verified as those of medical practitioners
practising in Stepney and the certificates accordingly endorsed.
Venereal Discuses

New patients attending the clinic in the Borough for treatment during the last threequarters of 1963, with comparative figures for .1962, are given in the following Table:-

Analysis of this Table demonstrates that the over-all rise is by
no means attributable only to the young. The figures for the groups
17 years and under are too small to allow statistical verification but
those for the age groups 25/29, and over 30 years, do show increases
ranging from 24 to 116 per cent over last year's comparable data. The
preventive approach is best concentrated on the younger age groups.
Particularly,'health and sex education of the adolescent are of paramount
importance in combatting this menace to the nation's health. Reference
is made on page 18 to such measures taken by this Council although the
part played by a sanitary authority which is not a health or education
authority is somewhat limited.

The number of lice infested persons bathed and whose clothing was
disinfested at the Council's Cleansing Station is as follows:-
