Approximately 13 tons of unsound food was allowed to be used for
animal feeding purposes, or for manufacturing purposes other than for
human consumption, the remainder being delivered to, or collected by
the Public Cleansing Department at whose riverside depot it was mixed
with household refuse, under the supervision of the Public Cleansing
Officer, and removed by barge to a controlled tipping site in Essex.
Approximately 2,600 condemnation certificates in respect of
unsound food were issued in 1960.
Zeebrugge-Harwich Train Ferry.
302 midnight or early morning visits and 140 other visits were made
to Bishopsgate Goods Station for the purpose of examining 8,445 trucks
of foodstuffs arriving from the following countries:-

The weight of the foodstuffs examined was 127,158 tons, comprising
105,173 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables, 14,156 tons canned meats
and sausages, etc., 4,320 tons bacon, 2,160 tons butter, 116 tons confectionery,
37 tons canned fruits and vegetables, 448 tons soups,
84 tons shell eggs, 61 tons fat backs, 442 tons horsemeat, 133 tons
cheese and 28 tons of miscellaneous foodstuffs.
Foodstuffs found to be unsound, and which were stopped and destroyed,
amounted to approximately 8 tons.
