Ice Cream.

Twenty- t wo samples of ice cream were subjected to the Methylene Blue reduction test, with the following results :-

Grade I- (2)14 (8)14 (10)
" II1 (-)- (-)1 ( -)
" III1 (-)- (-)1 ( -)
" IV6 (-)- (-)6 ( -)

(The figures in parenthesis are those for 1959).
All the Grade III and Grade IV samples were manufactured by the
same company. After two samples taken from retailers had proved to
be unsatisfactory, investigations were carried out and further samples
taken from the manufacturer) these also proved to be unsatisfactory
but narrowed the field of investigation. The company was advised
regarding methods of production and a further sample taken was Grade II.
Manufacture was then discontinued for the winter but investigations
will continue when the company resumes business.
Although there are 28 premises in the Borough registered for the
manufacture of Ice Cream, only three were used for this purpose during
the year. These were inspected from time to time under the Ice Cream
(Heat Treatment, &c.) Regulations, 1959, and no contravention of the
regulations was found.
