Deaths.—The total number of deaths, after deducting deaths of nonresidents
who died in the Borough and adding those residents who died in
Outlying Institutions was 2,217—1,218 males and 999 females—or 262 less
than in the previous year.
The death-rate for the whole Borough was 11.05 per 1,000 of the population.
Deaths in Public Institutions in the Borough.—2,136 deaths occurred in
Public Institutions in the Borough, of which 1,212 belonged to Stepney and
924 belonged to other Boroughs.

Deaths in Outlying Districts.—There were 466 deaths of persons belonging
to the Borough in various Institutions outside the Borough

In addition there were 15 deaths of Stepney residents in private houses
outside the Borough.
Public Assistance and Unemployment.—The Chief Officer of Public
Assistance and the Ministry of Labour have kindly supplied me with the
following information:—

II.—GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES.
Changes in Staff.—The following changes in the staff took place during
the year:—
Dr. E. J. O'Keeffe, Deputy and Assistant Medical Officer of Health,
resigned on the 31st December to take up a position elsewhere.
