Mr. R. H. Waterman, a district sanitary inspector, retired on superannuation
on the 30th November and Mr. J. J. Coveney, a qualified clerk in the
department, was appointed to fill the vacancy on the 27th October.
Mr. T. W. Dawson, a clerk, resigned on the 2nd January to take up a
new appointment.
Mr. R. Mahoney and Mr. J. Harvey, clerks, were transferred to this
department from another department of the Council on the 9th February.
The latter left to take up another appointment under the Council and Mr.
J. G. Lyons, a clerk, was transferred to this department from another department
of the Council to fill his place on the 7th June.
Miss O. M. Chapman was appointed on the 24th February as a clerk in
the Tuberculosis section and Miss A. I. Ward was appointed the same date
as a clerk in the Maternity section.
Mr. W. E. Hart and Mr. H. F. Mayo were appointed as junior clerks on
the 24th February.
Mr. F. Crockford, the caretaker at the Steel's Lane Tuberculosis
Dispensary, retired owing to ill-health on 6th August.
Nursing in the Home.—The arrangements made with the East London
Nursing Society for the nursing of cases of Measles, Pneumonia following
Measles, Ophthalmia Neonatorum, Puerperal Fever, Puerperal Pyrexia and
Pemphigus Neonatorum were continued. The Council pay this Society
Is. 3d. per visit to such cases and 97 visits were made by them during the year,
i.e., 2 Measles, 82 Ophthalmia Neonatorum and 13 Pemphigus Neonatorum.
Midwives.—There are 6 Midwives practising in the Borough, and in
addition there are 21 employed by the voluntary associations.
The midwives are under the supervision of the London County Council.

Laboratory facilities.—The number of bacteriological examinations made at the Mile End Hospital on behalf of the Public Health Department during the year was 2,633. These consisted of:—

There were 844 specimens of sputum examined at the Tuberculosis
Dispensaries. 168 of these were found to be positive.
