V.—INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
The year 1936 has been one of consolidation for the Food Section. The
good work commenced during 1935, the first year of its inception, has been
carried on.
Improvements continue to be brought about in dairies, cowsheds, milk
shops, ice cream premises, preserved food premises, butchers' shops, greengrocers
and food premises generally.
The rigid enforcement of the Merchandise Marks Act with regard to the
marking of fruit, meat and butter during 1935, has had good effect, and the
year 1936 showed a marked improvement in this direction.
Samples of dates, doughnuts, biscuits and cheese cakes exposed for sale

One pasteuriser's licence was granted during the year, and although the
business was carried on for a few months only, the milk produced was in every

The Sampling Officers continued to pay special attention to the sampling
of milk delivered to schools and hospitals in the Borough, and it is pleasing
to note that all the samples were satisfactory.
The number of prosecutions under the Food and Drugs (Adulteration)
Act, 1928, the Merchandise Marks Act and the Milk and Dairies Order, 1926,
has decreased as compared with the year 1935. In 1935, there were 20
prosecutions under the Milk and Dairies Order, 1926, as compared with 2
