On February 27th, Blumah Abrahams, aged 20, living at 89, Wilkes
Street, was taken ill, and removed to the Fever Hospital on March 1st. She
had been vaccinated in infancy. She visited Leah and Joseph Myers, at
85, Wilkes Street, on February 22nd. It is probable that the source of
infection was the same in the three cases, but I was unable to trace its origin
definitely. About a fortnight previous to their being taken ill, they went to
a wedding party in Hackney. No illness of a suspicious character had
occurred at the house they visited, but cases of Small Pox had been notified
in the immediate neighbourhood. As the party was a large one, and had
taken place about three weeks previously, it was impracticable to obtain
a complete list of the guests, but it can only be assumed that some of them
had been in contact with the Small Pox cases notified in Hackney.
On March 3rd another case occurred at 85, Wilkes Street (E. L., aged 34),
and was removed to the Small Pox Hospital on the same day. He had been
vaccinated in infancy.
85, Wilkes Street is a four-storeyed house let out in tenements, each floor
accommodating two families. Altogether 25 persons lived in the house. In
these circumstances it is satisfactory to know that no further cases occurred
in the district.
