Small Pox.
On Saturday, February 24th, I was asked to visit a suspicious case of
Small Pox, at 85, Wilkes Street. Leah Myers, aged 20, had been taken ill on
February 18th, the rash appearing on February 22nd. She had been vaccinated
in infancy only. On making inquiries, and examining the rest of the
family, I found that Joseph Myers, aged 23, was ill in bed. He was also
suffering from Small Pox. The latter was taken ill on February 18th, the
rash appearing on February 21st. He had been vaccinated in infancy only.
Both were removed to the Hospital, and the rest of the family was taken to
the Globe Road Shelter. The ground floor rooms are used as a provision shop,
and, as Leah Myers had served in the shop, I took away and destroyed all
articles in boxes and bottles which were open and partly used. The milk was
poured down the drain. The rooms were fumigated, and a new padlock was
put by us on the door of the shop. The shop was broken into by burglars on
the following night, and goods to the value of nearly £2 were stolen, including
5s. in money.
