closed as soon as the new bakehouse at ground floor level (which is at
present under construction) is completed. The use of one underground
bakehouse was discontinued during the year.
The whole of the milk delivered to domestic consumers in the
borough is now bottled outside the district. The only loose milk
handled is in the nature of bulk supplies to canteens, cafes,
restaurants and large institutions.
A number of new shops are being provided in the blocks of flats
erected by the Borough Council and the London County Council and
several of these are to be occupied by food handlers in place of old
premises which will be demolished. A higher standard of food hygiene
at the new premises is likely to be attained.
All public houses in the borough were specially inspected during
the past year and notices were served for the remedying of many defects.
In 40 of the 147 public houses, main meals are served ana in these
cases the kitchens and dining rooms are also kept under supervision.
Many public houses are without adequate sanitary accommodation for
their customers, and although it is impossible to deal with all of
these at once owing to the stringency at present with regard to building
works, a start has been made, and the construction of additional
sanitary conveniences in a number of cases is being proceeded with.
The provision of hot water supply to sinks in bars, kitchens and
cellars is also being requested in the few houses whore it is not at
present provided.
Most of the suggestions made to the London County Council
following the detailed inspection made last year of all the school
feeding arrangements have been carried out. There are still some
schools in which it is impossible to make entirely suitable arrangements
for this purpose, by reason of the age of the schools and the
limitation of space, and oertain plans for new kitchens have had to be
held over owing to the curtailment of building programmes.
In all food preparing premises in the Borough & constant supply
of hot water has been installed. It is now the policy of the department
to endeavour to have provided in all food-preparing premises and
in particular cafes and restaurants a refrigerator. Advice is given
to occupiers of all cafes and restaurants as to the safe method of
storage of all food and in particular of cooked foods. During the
year 5 refrigerators were installed.
During the year a reprinted pamphlet from the Monthly Bulletin
of the Ministry of Health and Public Health Laboratory Service
entitled "Insect Pests in Catering Establishments" was distributed to
all premises where food is prepared, sold or manufactured.
