I. - STATISTICS AMD GENERAL INFORMATION.
Area -- S62 acres. Population, Census 1931-97,033; RegistrarGenerai's
estimate, mid-1948-44,960, Number of structurally
separate dwellings, 1931 Census- 14,115. Number of houses (end
of 1948) according to rate books-9,450. Rateable value - £605,000.
Sum represented by penny rate-£2,352.
A great variety of industries is carried on in the Borough's
l,237 factories. Furniture-making is one of the most common of
these, and one which is by tradition firmly established in the
Borough. The number of home workers notified under the Factories
Act was 407.
