During 1948 the gross number of deaths registered in the Borough was 511.
The transferable deaths were as follows; -
Deaths of non-residents registered in Shoreditch, 158.
Deaths of Shoreditch residents registered elsewhere, 177.
The number of deaths which must be debited to Shoreditch is accordingly
530, which gives a nett death rate of 11,78 per 1,000 population In
connection with these deaths 34 inquests were held The death rate for
England and Wales was 10.8, and for London 11.6. Altogether 374 or 70.5 per
cent. of the people belonging to Shoreditch who died during the year died in
public institutions.
The table on page 11 showing causes of deaths at all ages has been supplied
by the Registrar General,
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
The deathsof infants under one year numbered 21 of which 13 were males and
8 females. These deaths amounted to 3,96 per cent. of the total net Shoreditch
deaths from all causes as compared with 6.51 per cent. in 1947. The infantile
mortality rate (death rate of infants under one year per 1,000 live births
registered during the year) was 24-62, The number of deaths of illegitimate
infants was 2, which gives a death rate of 36*36 per 1,000 illegitimate births.
The main causes of death in infants under one year of age were premature birth
congenital malformation, etc., and pneumonia.
