INSPECTORS WITH SPECIAL DUTIES.
In the early part of the year covered by this report consideration was
given, as already explained, to the question of the re-arrangement of the
duties of the Sanitary Inspectors. At the February meeting of the Council
it was resolved that the duties of Sampling Officers should in future be
discharged by one Inspector instead of two as previously, and that the number
of samples to be taken annually under the Sale of Food & Drugs Acts should
be reduced from 950 to 600.
It was further resolved that the Sampling Officer should, in addition,
exercise duties under the Merchandise Marks Act Regulations, the Sale of
Food Order, 1921, and the Meat Regulations (Stalls). The Officer in question
was, however, relieved of the duties of smoke observation.
When passing this resolution the Council gave instructions that the
Medical Officer of Health should report as to the arrangements in connection
with Sampling in six months' time. The report was considered in due course
and as a result of a recommendation of the Health Committee on the matter,
the Council passed the following resolution at its October meeting:—
"That the resolution of the Council of the 21st February, 1933, giving
the number of samples to be taken at 600 per annum, be varied, to
enable the Sampling Officer, at his discretion, to increase the
number of samples taken to 650 or 700 per annum."
The Food and Drugs (Adulteration) Act, 1928.
The reports of the Public Analyst, Mr. H. G. Harrison, M.A., show that
677 samples were submitted to him during the year. This number is at the
rate of 7.1 per 1,000 inhabitants.
