Housing Inspector.
As explained in the Section of this report dealing with Sanitary Work,
the duties of the Senior Sanitary Inspector were re-defined upon the retirement
of Mr. Pearson. Mr. Wright, who was appointed as his successor,
and who commenced duty in February, 1933, has assigned to him the
following duties under the Housing Acts: To make inspections, submit
reports, keep records as directed regarding matters dealt with under the
Housing Acts; to attend the meetings of the Housing Committee.
In accordance with these duties, Mr. Wright made the following inspections
during the year under consideration : —
Underground rooms inspected with reference to action being
taken under Section 20, Housing Act, 1930 ... ... ... 19
Houses inspected with reference to action being taken under
Section 17, Housing Act, 1930 ... ... ... ... 3
Derelict houses inspected upon instructions of Committee ... 28
As a result of action taken by the Committee upon reports arising out
of these inspections, one house—48, Whitmore Road—was rendered fit for
habitation and a demolition order was made in respect of 2, Northport Street.
There was an appeal against this order on the grounds that the building in
question although originally a dwelling-house had ceased to be such as a
result of certain alterations made soon after the war for the purpose of using
the premises as a factory. This appeal was granted in the County Court.
Haggerston Road School.
This school was not in use throughout the year here considered. Demolition
was commenced by the London County Council in January, 1934, and it
is understood that a block of flats is to be erected in the near future and that
ultimately this block will form the nucleus of a larger scheme.
Stonebridge Estate Improvement Scheme.
I have to thank Mr. C. T. Fulcher, the Borough Surveyor, for the
following memorandum upon this scheme : —
Stonebridge Estate comprised 143 properties in Lee Street, Haggerston
Road, Acton Street, Stean Street, Dunston Street, Loanda Street, Clarissa
Street and Dunston Road, accommodating 940 persons.
The area covers 3'51 acres or 152,895 feet super approximately, and was
purchased by the Council on 25th June, 1901.
