The total number of cases of infectious disease occurring in the Borough
was considerably less than during 1930, the numbers for the two years being
respectively 881 and 2,181. This difference is in the main due to a diminution
of 666 in the number of cases of smallpox, to the fact that chicken pox,
of which 377 cases were notified in 1930, was not notifiable during 1931, and
to a substantial drop in the number of cases of scarlet fever and diphtheria.
