There was a gratifying increase in the attendances during the year that is evidence
both of the need for and the good repute of this institution.
Neglected teeth are a most frequent cause of chronic ill-health which is brought
about partly by the continued absorption into the system of poisons from decayed
teeth and inflamed root sockets and partly by the derangement of the digestive
functions that result from a septic mouth.
The duty of taking care of the teeth is not discharged simply by going to the
dental surgeon when pain becomes unbearable, for by that time much harm to the
general health has been done and the opportunity of saving the teeth has often been
lost. Children should be taken regularly to the dental surgeon from their earliest
years. At these visits he is able to correct tendencies, likely, if uncorrected, to cause
serious later trouble. Adults also should form the habit of having their teeth regularly
inspected, or, if this appears to be a counsel of perfection, they should at least always
give prompt attention to the slightest warning of dental trouble.
The Hospital was maintained during 1928 on a half:time basis, five sessioi.s
being held weekly and to these sessions an alternate Monday afternoon was added
during the year. Since the end of the year under consideration, however, arrangements
have been made for making the hospital full time. Particulars of these
arrangements will be dealt with in the next annual report in which it is expected to
be able to record a still further extension of the usefulness of the institution.
