The birth rate for the Borough as a whole was 20.9. For England and Wales
the birth rate was 16.7 and for London 15.9. The illegitimate births numbered 75, of
which 40 were males and 35 females. Of these 29, of which 12 were males occurred in
St. Leonard's Hospital. The illegitimate births amounted to 3.6 per cent. for all
births credited to the Borough during the year.
The number of births occurring in St. Leonard's Hospital was 275; 145 males and
130 females. In fourteen of these the parents were not Shoreditch residents.
MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages during the year was 1,033 and the persons married were
at the rate of 20.6 per 1,000 population. The marriage rate for the Metropolis was

DEATHS.
During 1928 the total number of deaths registered in the Borough was 1,232.
The transferable deaths were as follows : —
Deaths of non-residents registered in Shoreditch 197
Deaths of Shoreditch residents registered elsewhere 346
The number of deaths properly belonging to Shoreditch is accordingly 1,381, which
figure gives a general death rate per 1,000 population of 13.8. The death rate in
England and Wales for 1928 was 11.7 and in London 11.6.
In the Table on page 4 are included corresponding figures for Shoreditch
during recent years.
