muscatels, dried pears, damsons, loganberries, peaches, tinned pears, ketchup, orange
marmalade, peas, tinned salmon, cheese, coffee and chicory essence, fish paste,
friar's balsam, black pudding, sugar, wine, chicken and ham, cornflour, oil of cloves,
oil of juniper, sago, boric acid, macaroni, mustard, compound mustard, and suet.
Of the samples of milk 6 or 1.1 per cent. were found to be below the standard
fixed by the Board of Agriculture. The proportion of milk samples returned as
adulterated during 1928 was again greatly below the average.

In four of the samples water was certified to have been added; in the four
cases it was less than 5 per cent.; in two the samples showed deficiencies in milk
fat; in these the deficiency was 6 and 7 per cent. respectively, taking the standard
of the Board of Agriculture.
Legal proceedings were instituted in two or 33.3 per cent of the cases in which
samples of milk were below standard. In one instance the case was dismissed,
and in the other costs only were allowed the Council.
No legal proceedings were considered advisable as regards the remainder of
the samples of milk below standard. The percentage of the adulterated samples
of milk in which it was not thought advisable to institute legal proceedings
was 66.7.
Seventy-two samples of butter were taken, and of these one was reported as
containing boric acid, to the extent of 9.1 grains per pound.
Fifty-one samples of sultanas were taken, one of which was found to contain 12.8
per cent. currants. Proceedings were instituted and costs allowed the Council.
Of the forty-three samples of vinegar taken, two contained 2 and 4 per cent.
excessive water, respectively. No proceedings were taken.
