amending of a defective drain and the provision of a proper dust receptacle. In
the latter case the summons was withdrawn as the dust receptacle needed had been
provided when it came before the Court.
The summons in respect to the house in Bridport Place was for non-compliance
with a statutory notice under Public Health (London) Act, 1891, requiring the
abatement of a nuisance due to the roof being defective and the premises being
dirty.
The summons in respect to the house in East Road was taken against a builder
for connecting a sink waste into a soil pipe contrary to the London County Council
by-laws dealing with such matters.
In the case of the house in Falkirk Street the owner was summoned for not
complying with a statutory notice requiring the provision of a dust receptacle.
The receptacle had been provided when the case came on for hearing before the
magistrate.
At the house in Gorsuch Street there was a defective drain. It, however, had
been dealt with to the satisfaction of the Sanitary Authority when the case came
before the magistrate, so the summons was withdrawn.
In the case of the house in Great Chart Street a builder had committed a
breach of the London County Council by-laws through failing to give proper
notice to the Clerk to the Sanitary Authority of his intention to fix a new w.c. pan.
In the case of the house in Mansfield Street a builder had constructed a watercloset
without giving the notice required under London County Council by-laws.
At the house in New North Road the yard paving was defective, this had
been remedied when the case came into Court, so the summons was withdrawn on
payment of the sum mentioned.
SMOKE NUISANCES.
During the year some 17 complaints were received from the London County
Council relating to the emission of black smoke from shafts belonging to 19
factories and work-places. In all cases the necessary steps were taken for obtaining
the abatement of the nuisances. Eleven intimation notices were served, but it
was not necessary to report any of the cases to the Sanitary Authority for further
action.
VERMINOUS HOUSES.
The houses in which it was necessary to take measures on account of the
presence of vermin numbered 395 as compared with 440 in 1913, 452 in 1912, 275
in 1911,197 in 1910, 99 in 1909, 127 in 1908, 111 in 1907 and 103 in 1906. The
rooms dealt with numbered 570 as compared with 610 in 1913, 910 in 1912, 518 in
1911, 386 in 1910 and 187 in 1909. Sanitary notices were served and the usual
steps were taken with the rooms, the walls being stripped, stopped, and cleansed
