The population of Wenlock Ward includes the inmates of the Holborn Union
Workhouse, which is situate in this locality. These, estimated at 1,375, are not regarded,
for certain statistical purposes, as persons belonging to Shoreditch, and are
accordingly for these purposes not reckoned in the population of the Borough, which
therefore becomes reduced to 115,564, whilst that of the ward becomes 1G,9G7.
BIRTHS.
As intimated in my report for last year, during the year under consideration
weekly returns of births have been supplied by the registrars in the same manner
as the death returns. These returns are of great value, as they enable a proper distribution
of the births in the several localities of the Borough, and in any particular
parts of the localities to be made, and also enable greater accuracy being obtained than
hitherto in ascertaining the number of births amongst the people belonging to the
Borough.
The number of births registered in the Borough was 3,894, of which 1,927 were
of males and 1.967 of females. The number corrected by the inclusion of the births
occurring in public institutions outside Shoreditch, the parents being residents of the
Borough, and the exclusion of those occurring in public institutions within the
Borough, the parents not being residents of Shoreditch, was 3,953, of which 1,962
were of males and 1,991 of females.
