FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT 1901.
The number of workshops, exclusive of bakehouses, on the register at the end of
1902 was 1,081, at the end of 1903 it was 1,133 and at the end of 1904 it was 1,133,
some 147 having been added to, and 147 removed from the register.
The following is a classification of the workshops registered according to the various
trades for which they are used:—

More than half of the workshops on the register are used in connection with the
various branches of the furnishing trade and next to these in point of numbers are the
workshops in which articles of dress are made.
All the workshops on the register were visited once during the year. Those
found to be kept in a satisfactory sanitary condition were not visited a second time.
Those found in an unsatisfactory condition were kept under observation until an
improvement was effected, and in connection with these a considerable number of
visits were made during the year. Altogether some 4,681 visits of inspection were
made in connection with the workshops on the register (Appendix).
The communications received from the Factory Inspector as to the establishment
of new workshops within the Borough numbered 33 and referred to 73 workshops.
The chief purposes for which these workshops are used are for various branches of the
furniture trade in 35 instances, for dress in 13 instances, and for leather and feathers in 5
instances. On inspection 54 were found in a satisfactory sanitary condition, 17 required
attention for the removal of sanitary defects, in one instance the occupier was found' to
have gone elsewhere and in one instance the workshop could not be found.
