Population
The population of the Borough, as estimated by the Registrar
General, mid-year, 1965, was 301,450.
Births
There were 4,913 live births appertaining to the Borough after
adjustment for inward and outward transfers, giving a crude birth
rate of 16.3 per 1,000 population. The adjusted rate for use when
comparing one area with another was 16.5 per 1,000 population.
The birth rate for the Borough was lower than the rate of 18.1 for
England and Wales as a whole.

In addition, there were 65 still births, representing a rate of 13.7 per 1,000 total live and still births, which is also lower than the rate of 15.8 for the country as a whole.
