PUBLIC CLEANSING, REFUSE COLLECTION
AND DISPOSAL.
The number of collection rounds was increased by one, and
an additional vehicle was purchased for this purpose.
A Heenan One Fill Power Baling Press was installed at the
Refuse Disposal Works to replace the hand operated paper baling
presses.
SWIMMING BATHS AND POOLS.
No improvements or alterations were made to the Corporation
Open Air Swimming Bath during 1954.
The Sanitary Inspectors made a total of 76 visits of inspection
to Swimming Baths and Pools in the Borough, and forty-four
samples of water were taken for examination.
Eight samples from the Corporation Bath were all satisfactory.
Of thirty-six samples taken from privately-owned swimming
baths and pools, thirty-two were satisfactory and four unsatisfactory.
116 routine colometric tests for checking the efficiency of
purification plants were also made by the Inspectors.
VERMINOUS CONDITIONS AND UNCLEANLINESS
105 visits to premises by Sanitary Inspectors related to
eradication of bugs, dirty conditions and disinfestations.
31 nuisances were found during the year and 15 were abated.
(This figure includes those found in 1953 and abated during 1954.)
MOVEABLE DWELLINGS.
During the year five licences were granted embracing a total
of twenty-three caravans.
The Sanitary Inspectors made frequent visits of inspection to
the four sites and no nuisances were found.
RAG FLOCK AND OTHER FILLING MATERIALS
ACT, 1951.
Seven informal samples were taken, all of which were satisfactory.
One registration has been granted under this Act.
The enforcement of the statutory requirements for cleanliness
of all fillings and stuffings for bedding, upholstery, toys and other
domestic articles, is essential for public health measures, as this
prevents unclean filling materials reaching the public.
