SCHOOL HYGIENE.
The standard of cleanliness and hygiene of the Bromley
schools has been maintained during the past year.
Bickley and Widmore C.E. School. New lavatories have
been provided, the playground re-surfaced, and the school
internally redecorated. These works have made a considerable
improvement to these temporary school buildings. The premises
are, however, totally inadequate for the purpose of modern
education, and the only solution is the building of the new school.
Valley County Primary School. The obsolete type of trough
closets have been removed during the year and a new w.c. system
installed.
Parish C.E. School, College Road. Plans for a complete new
system of lavatories and water supply at this school are under
consideration by the Kent Education Committee, and it is hoped
that the work, so long delayed, will be commenced very shortly.
School canteens have been frequently inspected during the
year, and the standard of cleanliness and personal hygiene of
the workers has been encouraged and maintained.
MEDICAL INSPECTIONS AT SCHOOL.
(See Tables I A and I C, and Table II A, cols. 2 and 3.)
246 medical inspection sessions were held at the schools and
clinics during the year ,when 3,269 children were examined, as
against 3,035 for the previous year. The average attendance at
each session was 13.3.
535 individual pupils were found to require treatment
(excluding Dental Diseases and Infestation with Vermin), giving
a percentage of 16.36 as against 15.9 for the previous year.
Parents continue to attend at the schools and clinics when
their children are being examined, and it is a source of satisfaction
to see the interest being taken in the School Health
Services.
Every opportunity is taken to obtain the consent of parents
to their children being immunised against diphtheria, but as this
service is now the responsibility of the County Council and the
records kept at Maidstone, I am unable to furnish detailed
figures.
The examinations have shown a satisfactory standard both
of health and general physique.
