PETROLEUM ACTS.
95 licences were issued to store Petroleum Spirit and one for
Carbide of Calcium.
The total storage capacity licensed during the year was :—
Bulk Storage 178,760 gallons.
Can Storage 12,689 gallons.
Carbide of Calcium 300 lbs.
As will be seen from the above figures, a large majority of
the Petroleum Spirit is stored in underground containers.
Can storage includes Petroleum Mixtures and Thinners.
42 visits were made in connection with this work.
SMOKE ABATEMENT.
12 inspections and re-inspections were made by the
Inspectors.
One complaint was received regarding the emission of grit
from a Milk Processing Plant. The firm provided and installed
two grit arrestors, and, from further observations, the nuisance
appears to have been abated.
VERMINOUS CONDITIONS AND UNCLEANLINESS.
89 visits to premises by Sanitary Inspectors related to eradication
of bugs, dirty conditions and disinfestations.
26 nuisances were found, and there were 41 nuisances abated
during the year (including those carried over from 1948).
Only four cases of vermin infestation were found in connection
with the Council's Housing Estates, and these were
successfully dealt with.
The very low incidence of verminous infestation and uncleanliness
is most pleasing, especially when one considers the
overcrowded and unsatisfactory conditions under which so many
people are still living.
RODENT CONTROL.
The Rodent Staff consisted of 2 Assistant Rodent Officers and
1 Rodent Operator, and they did excellent work during the year.
The public and traders are co-operating and requesting the
services of the staff. Unless this work is efficiently carried out
the build-up of rodents will again become a nuisance.
The sewers have received the necessary maintenance treatments
in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry
of Agriculture and Fisheries.
