Swimming Baths and Pools.
A total of 35 inspections were made by Sanitary Inspectors
during 1949, and 38 samples of water were taken for examination.
The results of these examinations were as follows:—
Of the 12 samples taken from the Corporation Swimming
Pool, 10 were satisfactory and 2 unsatisfactory.
26 samples were taken from privately owned Swimming
Baths and Pools, and of this number 15 were satisfactory and
11 unsatisfactory. The unsatisfactory samples were mainly due
to inefficient treatment, which was remedied after advice had
been given.
Public Cleansing and Refuse Collection.
The Borough Engineer reports that the reconstruction of
Cell Unit No. 1 at the Refuse Destructor was completed during
the year.
A new Hydraulic Tin Baling Press has been placed on order,
and delivery is expected shortly.
Factories Acts, 1937 and 1948.
Statistical details are given in Tables VII., VIII. and IX.
128 visits of inspection were paid to Factories during the
year; 86 nuisances and defects were found, of which 93 (including
those outstanding from 1948) had been remedied by the end
of the year.
In addition to the above, 53 inspections were made of Outworkers'
premises, all of which were found to be satisfactory and
no nuisances or defects were found.
There is great need for liaison between the Local Authority
and the Factory Authority when dealing with welfare of the
employees. At present this liaison is weak, as the service is
directly under the Home Office. To me there appears to be a
new scope of work for the Medical Officer of Health in the
medical supervision both at the factory and in the homes of those
so employed.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
Statistical details of the work carried out by the Sanitary
Inspectors will be found in Table VI. of the Appendix.
The following are the aggregate totals under the respective
headings:—
