CARE OF PREMATURE INFANTS.
The Health Visitors and Municipal Midwives continued to
give particular care and attention to premature infants.
The births of 23 premature babies in the Borough were
notified during the first half of the year, of which 5 occurred at
home and 18 took place in institutions.
Of the home birth cases:—
(a) 4 were nursed entirely at home.
(b) 1 was removed to hospital.
(c) 1 died during the first 24 hours of life.
(d) 2 died during the first week of life.
(e) 2 survived at the end of one month.
Of the premature infants born in institutions:—
(a) 1 died during the first 24 hours of life.
(b) 2 died during the first week of life.
(c) 15 survived at the end of one month.
PUERPERAL PYREXIA.
Twenty cases of Puerperal Pyrexia were notified during the
year, of which one was in respect of domiciliary and nineteen
were in respect of institutional confinements.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM.
No cases were notified during the year.
PEMPHIGUS NEONATORUM.
A minor outbreak of Pemphigus Neonatorum occurred at the
Widmore Road Maternity Unit of Bromley Hospital in April,
1948. Eight cases were notified; the disease, however, was of
a mild type and all cases made a good recovery.
