OLD PEOPLE'S HOMES.
There are five homes within the area which are run by
Voluntary Associations and Public Authorities for the care of
old people.
"Armstrong House," 1, Southlands Grove, Bickley.
This home is run by the Save Our Souls Society, of 24,
Ashburn Place, London, S.W.7, and I am indebted to the
Secretary of that Society for the following report on the Home
during 1948:—
"The average number accommodated during 1948, was 28
(17 men and 11 women). Three residents left during the year,
three new applicants were admitted and there were two deaths.
Although the general health of the residents was on the
whole good, many of them are noticeably more feeble.
Doctors visit the Home once a week or more often if
necessary, and a Chiropodist attends once a month.
Various friends of the Home arrange concerts and film
shows for the old people at least twice a month.
Gifts of food, books and clothing were received during
1948, and at Christmas, the Mayor of Bromley made a gift of
12s. 6d. to eighteen of the residents who had no income other
than their old age pension.
During 1948, "Armstrong House" was registered with, and
recognised by the Kent County Council, and the general scheme
of co-operation with the County Council is working very satisfactorily.
It is hoped to increase the facilities of the Home by building
an additional lounge and quiet room on the site of the old
conservatory, which was damaged by blast during the war."
"Southwood,'' Residential Club, Oldfield Road, Bickley.
This Club is run by the Women's Voluntary Services, and
the Organiser has kindly furnished the following report:—
"The Club was officially opened on 2nd January, 1948, by
the Lord Mayor of London. Numbers of residents steadily increased
during the year and the full complement of forty was
reached on 23rd October, 1948.
The Club has double and single bed-sitting rooms with hot
and cold water, with use of communal dining room and lounge,
billiard room and stands in 5½ acres of ground.
Residents may furnish their own rooms if they wish, with
the exception of bed and bedding, which is provided by the Club;
furniture is also provided by the Club if desired.
