DOMESTIC HELP SCHEME.
A continued and steady demand for this service, which provides
domestic assistance mainly in cases of sickness, was
evident throughout the year.
Every effort was made to respond to all appeals for assistance,
but owing to the difficulty of obtaining sufficient domestic
help staff, prior consideration had, of necessity, to be given to
the most needy cases and to those in an emergency.
A number of cases where patients are suffering from heart
disease, asthma, etc., who require domestic assistance over a long
and continuous period have, however, been assisted, until such
time as the applicants have been able to obtain help from the
Ministry of Labour.
Assistance has also been provided to expectant and nursing
mothers under this Scheme, in addition to that provided to
mothers during their confinements under the Home Help
Scheme. A separate report on this latter scheme is given in
Section C—Maternity and Child Welfare.
The following table gives details of assistance given under
the Domestic Help Scheme during 1947:—

HOSPITALS—VOLUNTARY AND ISOLATION.
(a) Bromley and District Hospital. This voluntary hospital,
situated in Cromwell Avenue, continues to provide a first-class
general hospital service.
In addition to general out-patient and in-patient departments,
there are two maternity units at 118, Widmore Road and
20, Masons Hill,- and details of the work carried out at these units
are given under " Maternity Hospital Provision " in this Report.
The hospital is also responsible for the provision of the
Ambulance Service on behalf of the Local Authority, and details
of this activity are also included in this Report.
(b) Isolation and Treatment of Infectious Disease. Provision
for the isolation and treatment of infectious disease is made by
the two hospitals in Lennard Road, one for general infectious
