"Southwood," Oldfield Road, Bickley.
The Residential Club for Elderly People is run by the
Women's Voluntary Services, and has accommodation for 40.
There were 36 residents at the end of December, 1947. 15 old
age pensioners are accepted, and the remainder are selected from
needy aged persons with incomes less than £200 per annum.
Payment is made according to income.
Applicants must have a clean bill of health, but short illnesses
are nursed at the Club by the staff with the assistance
of members of the British Red Cross Society. Cases of chronic
illness are expected to be removed to a nursing home by relatives,
but if this is not possible, the Women's Voluntary
Services have two nursing homes to which they can be
transferred.
"Dunoran," Park Farm Road, Bickley.
Dunoran Home, which has accommodation for 29 residents,
is under the control of the Brook Lane Medical Mission. 28
patients were admitted during 1947, and the majority of cases
are those in the last stages of illness, with the exception of a
few chronic incurables. Patients are admitted direct from
hospitals, or from their own homes if they are unable to be
nursed there.
Fees for maintenance are paid by the patients or relatives,
according to income, but in some cases grants are received from
public funds.
